13 Tips to Help You Pretend Like You Have Your Life Together


I figured that a lot of people could relate with the struggle of trying to get yourself together so I’ve been wanting to do this post for a while. There have been moments this summer where I would be rushing around trying to get out the door, but would still surprisingly not forget anything and look put together. Here are my top tips to help you pretend like you have your life together too:

  1. Front Door: The night before you have a meeting or go on a trip, place everything you need by the front door. I always do this and it’s a huge time saver. There is nothing I hate more then realizing I forgot something and having to drive all the way back home- so this tip helps me eliminate that.
  2. Set an Alarm: 1) Be realistic- if you’re setting a 5am alarm for the first time to workout, cook, then shower before work, then set an alarm for your usual alarm time as well in case you cannot get yourself up at 5am, that way you will make it to work. The last thing you want to happen is to miss the 5am alarm & then oversleep because you didn’t have another alarm set. 2) Put your alarm away from you so you have to get out of bed to shut it off. 3) If you get home from work or a trip & feel so exhausted that you want to take a nap, then go ahead & set your alarm for the next day. There has been 1 recent incidence where I barely slept on a weekend, had to do a long drive, & then laid down when I got home which resulted in me sleeping for 11 hours. If I hadn’t set an alarm before my nap (sleep?), this could’ve been disastrous.
  3. Make lists: I use my iPhone note pad so much. Whether it’s a to-do list for assignments or a “get this done in the morning” list, it always keeps me in order.
  4. Take one day every two weeks to pamper yourself: Who doesn’t feel more together when they have their nails done or their eyebrows waxed?? You should definitely take the time to do this at home or at a salon. Also try to do a face mask so your makeup will go on smoother & your face will look bright and refreshed.
  5. Coffee: Who has time to get coffee in the morning? That’s valuable sleep time you’re losing! What I love to do is make a french press caramel coffee, let it cool, pour a little bit in an ice tray, and then put the french press in the fridge. You can also put creamer in an ice tray. Then the next morning, I grab a tumbler, pour the cold coffee, and add two coffee ice cubes as well as a creamer ice cube and voila! I have iced coffee the next day.
  6. Breakfast: If there’s no time for breakfast, my go-to’s are a pack of Belvita breakfast biscuits (230 calories) or I grab an oatmeal packet and a mug & make it at work!
  7. Lunch: If you didn’t make your lunch the night before (which you should try to do), then grab ingredients that you would’ve used to make your lunch, and put them in a lunch box or plastic bag. I often make wraps so when I forget to make it the night before, I grab the pack of tortillas, bag of lettuce, and put ham slices in a ziploc bag. I place it all plus a yogurt in my lunch box and I’m done.
  8. Leave items in the same spot: The best way to stop wasting time looking for things is if you place them in the same spot everyday. I take off my badge after work & put it in my car so that in the morning I know it’s there. I always put my keys on the counter so I can grab it & go instead of look for them. Doing this is a big time saver.
  9. Clean your apartment: Nothing feels better than walking into your apartment and not seeing a mess. There are three main things I do: fold/ hang clothes, throw away trash and take it out, and do the dishes. My friend does a “10 minute tidy” each day where she cleans as fast as she can for 10 minutes and that’s it. You should try it if you don’t like taking a lot of time to clean!
  10. Getting Dressed: To be honest I don’t always pick out my outfits the night before. However, I try to have an idea of a shirt or skirt that I want to wear the next day, then when I wake up, all I have to do is try & match something with that item & I’m done.
  11. Hair: At work, it is not acceptable to come in with wet hair like it is at school. If you don’t have time to blow dry your hair, then towel dry your hair & drive with the windows down. Make sure to towel dry first because otherwise your shirt is going to get soaking wet in the car. (This tip only works if you have a 20+ min commute.)
  12. Braids: If you’re like me, then you always carry a hairband on your wrist but no bobby pins or hairspray. What I do to get rid of flyaways and bad hair days, is use braids in my hair. Sometimes I use a french braid down the side of my head (shown here), braid strands on each side of my head and then tie it together in the back with my hairband, or braid hair on the top right on my head and bring it plus the rest of my hair into a ponytail.
  13. Makeup: If you do every step of a makeup routine, it can take forever. What I do is use the three items that have the most dramatic effect on my face. For me it’s a foundation, eyeliner, & lipstick (a lot of my friends would grab a mascara instead of an eyeliner but it’s up to you!). The thing I love about bringing foundation with me too is that you can always double it as a concealer to cover any blemishes that occur.

    Nope nope I do the pampering too. As a follow-on to #8, I keep my keys, wallet, badge, etc in a dish so that I have a central location where everything that will go in my pockets is! Mixing that with #1 and putting the dish near the front door is even better!
